About

CPNE means Celtic Place Names of England.

A crowdsourced, interactive map of English placenames of Celtic origin.

The aim is discover what fraction of placenames in England derive in whole or in part from the Celtic names for those places.

Why is this Necessary?

This type of research should not be necessary after many years of research by experts in the field. But, if you consult the relevant sources of information, the generally held impression is that few placenames derive from Celtic, rather, the vast majority are Anglo-Saxon, with some elements of Latin origin.

The most widely held view, among experts and lay people is that Celtic had little or no influence on English and English placenames.
